The University of Salamanca

21 Dec

I will be studying at the University of Salamanca (USAL). It was founded in the 13th Century (1218). How’s that for experiencing history firsthand?

In one of the lecture halls, Hebrew scholar Fray Luis de León , after 5 years in the prisons of the Inquisition, began his first lecture with: “As we were saying yesterday…”. You can see a virtual image of that lecture hall here: http://www.usal.es/webusal/en/node/943?bcp=conocenos. It is the one titled: Aula Fray Luis de León

Three of my four classes will be taught there by USAL professors. One of the classes is a political science course, and will be taught in English, and the other two are regular courses taught in Spanish. The fourth class is taught in Spanish by Emory’s on-site program director at the Emory Center in Salamanca. I’ll be in class all day, Monday through Friday. Some of my classes are 3 hours A DAY. Whew. That’s something that will take some getting used to.
